UK students a fourth of new Fayette COVID cases -

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ky. (WTVQ) – A total of 81 new coronavirus cases were reported in Fayette County residents Monday, bringing the total to 4,602 since the outbreak started in March.

Of the numbers, 21 were University of Kentucky students, according to the Health Department. That brings the number of UK students in the total to 261, according to the Health Department stats.

The Health Department has confirmed 1,347 positive cases in August, putting the month on pace to be the single-highest month, topping the record set in July.

No new deaths were reported during the weekend, leaving the total at 51.

According to the Health Department’s update, as of Tuesday morning, 3,652 people have reported recovering, an increase of 70 from Monday morning.

Overall, more than half of Lexington’s total COVID-19 cases came during July, with 1,702 new COVID-19 cases. The city reported 1,553 cases from March 8 — the date of the first case in Fayette County — through June 30.

The recommendations for slowing the spread of COVID-19 remain the same for any reason you are out in the public:

• Wash your hands often

• Avoid close contact with others

• Wear a cloth face covering in public.

UK student testing, along with an outbreak at the Fayette County Detention Center, have contributed to the Fayette numbers in recent days.

If a UK student is tested and remains in Lexington for their isolation, the Health Department counts them in the county numbers. Students who are tested on campus but who live out of county or who leave for their isolation will not be counted, according to the Lexington Fayette County Health Department guidelines.
