June 09, 2019 – New York

Tickets will be $20 Day of Show

It’s a statement that offers no small sense of hope, in that sense matching the music contained on the album.
On these vividly imagined and passionately performed songs David Ramirez takes in the world from his unique perspective: “Being half white and half Mexican has made this current political climate especially interesting. So many cultures in this country are being viewed as un-American and it breaks my heart. My family have raised children here, created successful businesses here, and are proud to be a part of this country. Most of what I’ve seen as of late is misplaced fear. I wanted to write about that fear and how, instead of benefiting us, it sends us spiraling out control.”
The album that bears that title marks a departure for Ramirez, who builds on the rootsy sound of his early albums to create something new, something bold, something anchored in the here and now. Scouting out unexplored music t… (read more)

June 10, 2019 – Brooklyn

This event is 21 and over
A songwriter who knows how to “leave an impression” with “elegantly celestial climaxes, emerald green-glowing guitar work” (p4k) and “smoky” vocals (NPR), Cassandra released self-titled EP, in 2013. Bedded in haunting arrangements of tremolo guitar and washy organ, she draws you into a world lying somewhere between Mazzy Star and Twin Peaks. It’s an arrestingly intimate place, where if you listen closely enough, you’ll find something as timeless as it is bittersweet.
She now stokes the campfire with new surfy, psychedelic energies from Celestial Shore’s Sam Owens (vocals, guitar) and Austin Vaughn (drums) to set the sound of the Cassandra Jenkins Band. The flames roar in a vivid vision that braids swelling desert melodies and textbook sincerity. It’s the kind of pop that steals your breath but replaces it with a limb-surrendering rhythm.

Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or coloured pigments; oils are not used. As with calligraphy, the most popular materials on which paintings are made are paper and silk. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Traditional painting can also be done on album sheets, walls, lacquerware, folding screens, and other media.

Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl – Lt. Petrosino Square
June 12, 2019 – New York

In 1920, the United States enforced the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which banned liquor production, public consumption and the selling of anything alcoholic. This catapulted the criminal world and helped the mob monopolize and grow their illegal business of alcohol. It made some of the most vicious gangsters gain fame and fortune. Illegal bars known as speakeasies opened by the thousands and served bootleg liquor to a thirsty public. On this tour, you will walk in the footsteps of the gangsters and visit some of the watering holes that served illegal liquor during Prohibition. There you can sip a craft cocktail served by some of the top bartenders in New York City. While sipping on your now “legal” alcoholic beverage you will hear stories of the Mafia and how it infiltrated into society. At the end of the tour you will be a “wiseguy” about Prohibition and the Italian mob. Further, you will stop in for some of the best pizza in all of New York City. The tour kicks off at Lt. Petrosino Square.

Selected Shorts: A Celebration of James Baldwin – Symphony Space
June 12, 2019 – Manhattan

In novels including Go Tell It on the Mountain and Another Country, and essay collections such as The Fire Next Time, writer James Baldwin grappled directly with the most painful truths of the African American experience. By turns gentle and ferocious, personal and political, Baldwin’s work addresses not only race but religion, economic disparity, family, and the then-taboo subject of gay life. And with Moonlight director Barry Jenkins’ new adaptation of If Beale Street Could Talk in theaters, it’s clear that Baldwin reflects the beauty and barbarism in American life more than ever.
Hosted by Lisa Lucas, from the National Book Foundation, Selected Shorts honors one of the most influential and groundbreaking writers of our time. This evening will feature a wide range of material from Baldwin’s works delivered by a coterie of Shorts actors including Nathan Hinton (Madam Secretary), Joe Morton (Scandal), Carra Patterson (Straight Outta Compton), Anthony Rapp (Star Trek: Discovery), and Charlayne Woodard (Pose).
In partnership with the National Book Foundation’s new initiative, Author in Focus.

Limbo: The Consequences of Being Stuck – Club Free Time
June 13, 2019 – New York

In a world that demands faith in progress and growth, Limbo is a companion for the stuck, the isolated, delayed, stranded and those in the dark. Fusing memoir with a meditation on creative block and a cultural history of limbo, Dan Fox considers the role that fallow periods and states of inbetween play in art and life. Limbo is an essay about getting by when you can’t get along, employing a cast of artists, ghosts and sailors – including the author’s older brother who, in 1985, left England for good to sail the world – to reflect on the creative, emotional and political consequences of being stuck, and its opposites.

Paternity: The Elusive Quest for the Father – Club Free Time
June 13, 2019 – New York

For most of human history, the notion that paternity was uncertain appeared to be an immutable law of nature. The unknown father provided entertaining plotlines from Shakespeare to the Victorian novelists and lay at the heart of inheritance and child support disputes. But in the 1920s new scientific advances promised to solve the mystery of paternity once and for all. The stakes were high: fatherhood has always been a public relationship as well as a private one. It confers not only patrimony and legitimacy but also a name, nationality, and identity.
The new science of paternity, with methods such as blood typing, fingerprinting, and facial analysis, would bring clarity to the conundrum of fatherhood–or so it appeared. Suddenly, it would be possible to establish family relationships, expose adulterous affairs, locate errant fathers, unravel baby mix-ups, and discover one’s true race and ethnicity. Tracing the scientific quest for the father up to the present, with the advent of seemingly foolproof DNA analysis, Nara Milanich shows that the effort to establish biological truth has not ended the quest for the father.

shmael Reed’s new play “The Haunting of Lin-Manuel Miranda” will premiere at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in May, after four sold-out readings and coverage from the New York Times, New Yorker magazine, the Observer, the Paris Review and more. Like theater in the time of Bertolt Brecht or the WPA, Reed’s new work (under the direction of multiple AUDELCO winner Rome Neal) challenges the narrative of commercial theater and mainstream historical accounts. According to historian Ron Chernow and Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alexander Hamilton was an abolitionist, even though the real Hamilton was involved in the slave trade in a variety of ways. His policy toward Native-Americans was “extirpation.” Reed’s play brings to the forefront those characters who are absent from “Hamilton, The Revolution”: slaves, Native Americans, indentured servants and Harriet Tubman. On this tour, you will walk in the footsteps of the gangsters and visit some of the watering holes that served illegal liquor during Prohibition. Decades on, and a former dictator’s self-mythologizing mausoleum is crumbling from within. But as Right and Left clash in the outside world and the political debate creeps violently towards the door of the monument, her attempts at professional distance are quickly challenged. Gangster Mob Prohibition Pub Crawl – Lt. Petrosino Square
June 16, 2019 – New York
